By Petty Pablo
Grab your drink, because Shannon just got Corey Holcomb to open up about his issues with Ryan Davis.
The Viral Moment: Holcomb vs. Davis – A Comedy Clash Explained
Alright, alright, alright, so Shannon done dug deep and got Corey to spill the tea on what went down with Ryan Davis. See, Corey Holcomb, that hilariously cynical voice of reason for many a Black man, and Ryan Davis, who gone on to glory now, had beef, man. Real beef. Holcomb felt some kinda way about Davis, and it wasn’t just some playful ribbing.
Basically, Holcomb felt that Davis’s success was somehow… pause for dramatic effect… fraudulent. He touches on feeling as though Davis had stolen content, or ideas from fellow comics. He felt like Davis was more corporate, inauthentic, and not really representing the “real” comedy game, and he wasn’t shy about letting folks know it.
Corey goes on to describe how he’s from the old school, where you had to earn your stripes, honing your craft in the trenches of comedy clubs. He implied that Davis hadn’t done that work, or at least, not in the way Corey felt was legit.
The interview dives into Corey’s perspective on authenticity in comedy, and how he felt Davis didn’t quite measure up to his standards. He didn’t back down from his opinions. Holcomb is HOLLA-ing about feeling betrayed, and feels like the jokes Davis was using in Detroit were indeed his own jokes.
It’s messy, it’s complicated, and it’s definitely got folks talkin’.
